Butterfly Weed Seeds (Asclepias)

Perennial of the Year: Asclepias

Monarch butterflies everywhere are clapping their wings with joy at the news that the Perennial Plant Association has named Asclepias tuberosa as the 2017 Perennial of the Year.

Butterflies will seek out your garden when you have this vigorous perennial, shrub-like plant. You can also observe the life cycle of the monarch by adding this plant to your garden. This plant is late to break dormancy, so be patient in the spring. When to plant outside: Spring, after all danger of frost has passed and up to 8 weeks before the first fall frost. When to start inside: 6-8 weeks before average last spring frost. GARDEN HINTS: Will tolerate some drought and little salt and will also grow in dry to moist soils. Prefers well-drained soils with a pH of acidic to slightly alkaline. Full Sun, Light Shade.Raising them from seeds is the most certain method of propagation.
